Connecticut Roof Anatomy
Knowing how your roofing is structured can help you if you need to speak with a Connecticut roofing contractor, and it can help make sure that a roofer isn’t able to take advantage of you. It may seem that roofs are very complicated, and you may think they’re too difficult for the layman to understand. But in actuality, it’s fairly simple. Knowing a few terms, what they mean, and how the separate parts of a roof work together can make the difference between a layman and a knowledgeable homeowner. Here are a few terms and descriptions that can go a long way toward helping you understand a roof anatomy.
Shingles
Shingles are the top-most part of the roof. Asphalt shingles are the most common type that are installed today. But there are also metal shingles, wood shingles, concrete shingles, and tile. The type of shingles that you use for your roofing will be based on your home’s architecture, aesthetic design, and your own budget and energy efficiency needs.
Vent Pipe
These are the plastic or iron pipes that are connected to your home’s plumbing system. They come up and out of the roof to provide outside air to your plumbing system, helping the drains work more efficiently. These are important to keep in mind, because they cause a break in your roofing, and that can create a more complicated—and more expensive—roofing job.
Chimneys
Obviously, most people are aware of what chimneys are. But what’s important to remember is that, like vent pipes, chimneys cause a break in your roofing, and, again, can make roofing jobs more complicated.
Ridge
The ridge of your roof the peak of a slope on your roof. Often, these are where vents are run to allow hot air to escape the attic.
Gutters and Downspouts
These run along the fascia of your roof and allow for the safe distribution of rainwater. Without them, rainwater would seep into the ground near your foundation, and could cause your foundation to rot and / or leak.
Fascia
A horizontal board attached to the lowest parts of your roof. This is where gutters are typically installed.
Gable
The triangular face of a home that forms the peak of a roof. Think of the triangle part of the triangle-square combo that forms a child’s drawing of a home.
Eaves
Eaves are the lower edge of the roof that extend beyond your walls.
Soffit
The soffit is the underside of the eaves. These are often where your other set of vents are to provide fresh air into the attic.
