Connecticut Gutter Guard Comparisons
Let’s face it: anyone can point out what’s good about their gutter guards to make a sale. And the comparisons they draw between their and their competitor’s gutter guards won’t always be fair. But at Premium Siding & Windows, we know that our gutter guards are one of the best on the market, and we’ll prove it.
Gutter guard comparisons should start by testing consistent amounts of debris on different gutter guard systems. Pine and fir needles, for example, are two completely different types of conifer needs, with very different characteristics. But they should both be kept out of the gutter system, and also shouldn’t be allowed to build up on the gutter guard surface. The same applies to spring debris that most trees drop when they start to bud. You should also test with leaves, acorns, and twigs.
The “Other” Gutter Guard Comparison: What Other Systems Will Get You to Focus On:
- Thick Aluminum! They’ll make you do the “touch test”, and tell you how strong it is. Is strength important? Yes and no. First, think of your existing gutters. They have never been thick, they’re made to adapt and adjust to wavy fascia boards, warped sub roofs and the inevitable drop towards the downspout. The biggest issue is working with roof shingles. Thick aluminum can cause a trough to form in the shingles before the gutter. Rainwater builds up here and seeps in under the shingles at the seams. Dry rot can occur above every gutter run causing thousand of dollars of damage since shingles, the sub roof and rafters may sustain damage.
- Unique One-Piece System! One piece systems have been around since the early 1900s. They tend to work well when the weather is dry, and let in debris through the gap that runs the whole gutter run when it rains. Systems that use hanger only under the curve can actually start to yawn open over time, particularly in climates with snow and ice. Many of these systems are installed with oversized downspouts or open for “easy cleaning”.
- They’ll clean it when it clogs! Do you really want to install a gutter guard that doesn’t do what you expect it to? Cleaning it for free when it clogs doesn’t solve the problem you set out to solve, which was keeping debris out of your gutter. Cleaning it for free solves their problem, because they don’t have a system that will perform like they advertise it will.
Flaws in Typical Gutter Guard Comparisons
Any system that has wide openings may work reasonably well with debris—as long as the weather is dry. Once it rains, however, it’ll be a different story. Certain designs will trap debris and let them into the gutter system. And once the debris is allowed to get wet, it’ll cling onto whatever surface it comes into contact with. Debris will pushed or carried forward in the rain water, following the path of the roof, and the gutter guard. With curved system, this means a lot of debris will follow the curve and get into the system below.
One institution, during their gutter guard comparison, gave simple plastic mesh their “best buy” stamp of approval. But go through one spring after investing in a plastic mesh system, and you probably will disagree. That’s because it’s the small stuff that gets into the gutter. So while they may be able to demonstrate that larger debris won’t make it through their mesh, you’ll still be dealing clogs, and you’ll still be having to clean your gutters.
